Artist
Anton Steenbock
Anton Steenbock’s work critically examines capitalism's role in shaping contemporary society and the environment, focusing on how intricate economic systems increasingly influence both natural and urban landscapes. His installations and interventions engage with monumental architectural and urban development projects, commercial showrooms, and large-scale advertising campaigns, aiming to heighten public awareness of political, ecological, and societal transformations. His work also interrogates the corporate takeover of public spaces, targeting entities like Google Street View and sharing economy platforms such as Uber, Coop, and Airbnb.
Steenbock's art has been showcased internationally, with solo exhibitions at prominent venues including the MAC Museum of Contemporary Art in Rio de Janeiro, Centro Cultural São Paulo CCSP, Biennale SUR in Argentina, Frestas Triennale in Sorocaba, Weserhalle in Berlin, Frise in Hamburg, and the Historical Museum of Frankfurt am Main. His group exhibitions span notable institutions like the Akademie der Künste Berlin at the Martin Gropius Bau, the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig, Kunst Werke KW Berlin, the Museum of Contemporary Art MAES in Brazil, and the Museum of Art MAR in Rio de Janeiro.
A committed researcher and artist, Steenbock held a fellowship with the Berlin Program for Artists (BPA) from 2019 to 2021. In 2021, he received both the Research Stipend from the Berlin Senate and a Production Stipend from VG Bild. Collaborating with Peter Behrbohm in 2020, he won the Berlin Senate’s Public Art Competition (KISR) and completed the Neustartkultur Module C project. His work was also nominated for the Pipa Prize in Brazil in 2017, during which he was a resident at the Capacete and Despina programs from 2012 to 2017.
